DESCRIPTION:Our Dear Donor\,  \nIt has been a year since I last wrote to you to support HWA’s cause. I looked back with a grateful heart because 2023 has been tough with higher cost of living and new waves of Covid-19\, yet we have also made some progress.  \nHWA now has an Senior Day-Care Centre while continuing its existing services to meet the increasing needs of Persons with Physical Disability (PWDs) and the Elderly. I work full-time at HWA while my husband Lim Tow Kin is able to continue with HWA’s subsidised rehabilitation with other beneficiaries to maintain their muscle function. Exercising together makes all of them very happy and provides relief to their caregivers.  \nTo ensure the continued operation of HWA programs and services\, HWA will be having the 40th Wheel\, Walk\, or Jog & Family Carnival once again on Saturday\, 27 April 2024\, at the Singapore Sports Hub – OCBC Square – to raise funds and to create awareness of HWA’s mission to serve the community for it. It will be a physical event like the one in 2023 this year. DESCRIPTION:Our Dear Donor\, \nFueling Changes\, Impacting Lives! \nI am Hasidah\, 65 years old\, a mother of five. My second daughter\, Zurah had given me 5 grandchildren. In I’ve faced the heartbreak of losing my first grandson to a heart problem when he was just 4 years old. During the same year\, my husband suffered a stroke\, further adding on to my burdens. \nTragically\, in 2015\, Zurah suffered a stroke\, leaving her bedridden and ending her marriage. I left my job as a cleaner to provide full-time care for Zurah and my husband\, along with supporting my eldest son who has an intellectual disability. In 2021\, we were struck by another devastating loss with the passing of my husband. \nIn the midst of our struggles\, we were fortunate to be connected with HWA by a government agency. Zurah became a beneficiary of HWA’s Personal Home Care Services\, which provided essential assistance by sending a healthcare attendant to assist Zurah’s showering care showering thrice weekly. This has been an immense blessing\, alleviating some of the burdens I carry. \nWe know there are many families like us who receive help from HWA. Even though it’s hard\, we keep going for our family. HWA’s services not only transformed our lives\, but also instilled a sense of hope and resilience through our daily struggles. \nHWA’s Flag Day will be held island wide on 31st August 2024 to raise funds for its programmes and services. DESCRIPTION:Dear Donor\, \n  \nSUPPORT FRAIL ELDERLIES THIS FESTIVE SEASON – YOUR HELP BRINGS COMFORT & CARE (HONG BAO FESTIVE APPEAL 2024 – 2025) \nMy name is Tan Ah Chai\, and I am 81 years old. In 2015\, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. My husband passed away in 2020 and I became a widow. I moved on with life though I was sad. Over time\, my condition worsened\, and I was bedridden in 2022. Since then\, my life has been confined to my bed at home. \nI have only one daughter. She tries to take care of me in her own way—like making sure my meals are settled but there is a limit she can do as she has her own health problems and struggles. While she did what she could\, there were many times when we felt that we both needed more support. \nTan Ah Chai with her daughter and HWA Health Care Attendant \nThankfully\, I was referred to HWA and became a beneficiary of HWA’s Home Care Service for Personal Hygiene & Housekeeping as well as HWA’s Medical Escort Transport Service. The healthcare attendant from HWA would come to my house to help me with bathing\, transferring from my bed\, changing my diapers\, and keeping my home clean twice a week. There is also an escort to bring me to hospital appointments. Their care brought me comfort and a sense of dignity in my old age. \nThere are many frail elderlies out there who are confined to their homes like me and we need HWA services. This support is only made possible by your generosity. SUMMARY:Embracing Hope\, Regaining Independence!
DESCRIPTION:Dear Donor\, \n\n\n\nMy name is Tan Yan Lie Francesca\, a 73-year-old beneficiary of HWA. I was once a businesswoman\, fully independent and thriving in my career. However\, life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Myelo-polyradiculitis\, a spinal infection that affected the lower part of my body. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhotos taken in HWA Jurong Rehab Centre\n\n\n\n\n  \nBeing initially able-bodied\, I became wheelchair-bound and faced the harsh reality of losing my ability to perform basic tasks such as toileting\, showering\, transferring\, and dressing myself. During this difficult time\, I felt utterly lost and even had suicidal thoughts. But with strong determination and the support of those around me\, I found the strength to move forward. HWA’s rehabilitation services have been a lifeline in this journey. 20 years ago\, I couldn’t sit stably\, but consistent therapy from HWA has helped me regain stability and prevent further muscle deterioration. This supports my goal of being as independent as possible\, reducing the burden on my caregiver. My challenges are not mine alone. There are many others like me who rely on HWA’s services to regain hope and independence. I shared how I’ve been caring for my daughter\, Zurah\, who became bedridden after a stroke in 2014\, and my eldest son who has an intellectual disability.\n\nA year has passed\, and I wanted to share how your support has continued to make a difference for us. Thanks to HWA’s Personal Home Care Services\,\nZurah receives regular showering care three times a week\, which has helped to maintain her condition and overall well-being. These visits by HWA’s healthcare attendant ensure that Zurah’s hygiene and comfort are well taken care of. For me\, this support has been invaluable as it is more than physical relief; this is a peace of mind and a moment to breathe\, knowing that she is in good hands.                                                                                                               \nWe are just one of many families who rely on HWA’s vital services. DESCRIPTION:Dear Donor\,\n\nI am Chia Boon Hong\, 73 years old. I once had a fulfilling career as a PUB engineer\, working alongside my wife — a dedicated former nurse — to raise our three children. Life was stable and purposeful until everything changed at age 45\n\n    \n\nIn 1997\, I was suddenly struck by transverse myelitis\, leaving me unable to walk and dependent on my wife for many daily activities. Despite my condition\, I did my best to care for my older brother\, who has an intellectual disability\, by arranging for a helper to ensure he was properly looked after.\n\n \nLife has been challenging\, but for the past 15 years\, HWA’s Rehabilitation Services have been a vital source of support. The sessions help relieve tension and stiffness in my body\, keep my muscles toned\, enable me to remain physically functional and mentally alert. \n\nI am just one of many individuals who rely on HWA’s vital services. Whether it’s rehabilitation or the prescription of mobility devices\, these services have greatly improved my overall well-being and helped me regain my dignity  — thanks to the respectful care provided by the staff. DESCRIPTION:Dear Donor\,\n\n\n\nMy name is Mohamad Rizal. I’m 49 years old. In 2008\, a motorbike accident left me with a spinal cord injury at the C5 level. Overnight\, my life changed-from being independent to needing help with basic daily tasks such as bathing\, dressing\, toileting\, transferring\, and moving around.\n \n\nRehabilitation Session at HWA Whampoa with our Therapist\n \nI live with my 76-year-old mother. Since my father passed away in 2019\, she has been my pillar of strength\, caring for me tirelessly even as she grows older each day. I worry about what the future holds — what will happen when her health declines\, and how I will manage without her. Still\, I strive every day to maintain as much independence and dignity as I can\, for both of us.\n \nHWA has been a lifeline for us. Through their rehabilitation and transport services—provided free because of our circumstances—I can prevent further physical deterioration and remain as functional as possible. Without this support\, my quality of life would decline rapidly.\n \n\nTo keep these vital programmes running\, HWA is organising the 42nd Wheel\, Walk or Jog to raise funds and create awareness of our mission to serve the community. \n\nEvery dollar counts. Every act of kindness brings hope.
